The Ceremony of Discipleship
The ceremony of becoming a disciple is done accordingly to traditional Chinese ceremonies of the sort. An auspicious time and day will be selected for the ceremony to take place. Before the ceremony, the would-be disciple will cleanse himself or herself and will change into new clothes. Incense will be lighted and he or she will invite the teacher to be seated in the seat of honor. Behind will be seated the statues of past ancestors and masters. On the two sides will seat the witness and the introducer. The disciple will kneel down and bow to his or her teacher three times and present to him the document of discipleship with two hands. After the ceremony, the teacher will invite respected members of the field and of the arts community to introduce his new disciple. From now on, the disciple will address his teacher as Xian-shen.
Disciples’ responsibilities include protecting and propagating the arts of Zizen. Disciples must respect and help one another. As everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, no one should be arrogant or flamboyant about their individual strengths. Disciples must help the public by being kind.
On the first day of Chinese
New Year, it is a traditional act that the disciple pays his or her respect
to his Xian-shen, bringing the traditional red pocket to greet and
celebrate the beginning new year.
